How to Choose the Best Wedding Cake for your Big Day

Choosing a wedding cake for your special day is not as easy as it initially sounds.  With so many different styles and flavours of cake available today, it can be a minefield tasting and selecting the best one for your wedding!  Follow these tips and you are sure to find selecting a wedding cake a little bit easier.

Stick with a Theme

When choosing a cake for your wedding, pull inspiration from the other aspects you have chosen, such as your wedding dress, invitations, colour scheme or even the venue itself.  Vintage cakes in pale shades of grey, lilac and baby blue are exceptionally classy teamed with the finest floral china teacups and saucers and a vintage glass cake stand.  Remember that a reputable cake designer will enquire about the type of wedding you’re planning and will need to know every last detail of your big day in order to design the cake of your dreams!  You should try to choose a cake designer who is an expert in their field; for example if you’re looking for a retro themed wedding cake, then choose someone who specialises in these.

A Moment on the Lips…

The fun part of choosing a wedding cake is always the tasting sessions!  You should always ask to see samples of cakes your designer has already made and taste these to ensure they really do taste as good as they look, before setting your heart on a certain one.  Sometimes, it’s good to experiment and play around with flavour and textures.  Whilst wedding cake is traditionally a fruit cake, you could try different flavours such as lemon, chocolate or carrot cake, or why not have a different flavour for each tier?

Dare to be Different

Nowadays, most patisseries and cake designers will be happy to break from tradition and create something a little bit special for your big day.  Why not consider a tower of miniature wedding themed cupcakes in pretty pastel shades, or even a tower of brightly coloured Macarons – very popular at Parisian weddings.  Mountains of profiteroles have even been known to take the place of a traditional wedding cake and when something this delicious is to be shared amongst all your guests, make sure that you set some aside for yourself and your partner first – they’re guaranteed to go fast!

Don’t Overthink Things

Remember not to focus entirely on this one aspect of your wedding.  Organising a wedding is a difficult job (it’s the reason why so many people hire professional wedding planners!) and as well as your cake, you need to think about your dress, wedding venue, photographer(s), rings, invitations, and even how you are going to arrive at your venue.  Why not hire a Rolls Royce Phantom and see the envious looks on your guest’s faces as you pull up outside the church in style.  Most wedding car hire companies will provide a bridal package that can include decorations for the car and champagne for the wedding party en-route to the venue.

Choosing the best wedding cake for your special day is just one of the many things you need to consider when planning your wedding.  Tasting cake samples is possibly one of the most exciting aspects of choosing a cake, but don’t have too many samples or your wedding dress may not fit on the day!
